We're building a football sim league on Hizzle. Before I build anything, I want to hear from you.

What would make you sign up on day one and keep coming back?

The rough idea:

  • Our own league. Made-up players, real cities, our own team names. No real NFL teams or players.
  • Start small. A handful of teams in season 1, more teams every season as people join.
  • Games simmed on a schedule. Box scores, standings, stats.
  • The computer runs empty teams until somebody takes them over.

Answer whatever you care about. "1B, 2A, 3C" is fine. Short answers are fine.

  1. What do you want to be? A. GM. Roster, contracts, trades, draft. B. Head coach. Game plan, depth chart, play-calling style. C. A player. Create one guy, train him, earn your snaps. D. All of it. Run the whole team.

  2. How should teams start? A. Fantasy draft. Everybody drafts from one pool. B. Random rosters, balanced so nobody starts stacked. C. Expansion. Start bad and build it up.

  3. Which of these features should be included and excluded?

  • Salary cap and contracts
  • Free agency
  • Trades
  • Draft with scouting (you don't see real ratings until you scout)
  • Player development and aging
  • Injuries
  • Hiring and firing coaches
  • Playbooks and schemes
  • Weather and home field
  1. How often should games sim? A. Every day B. Every other day C. Once a week, like the NFL

  2. How much time would you put in? A. 5 minutes a day B. 30 minutes a week C. Whatever it takes

  3. Doing stuff on Hizzle (picks, Cap Space, posting) earns points you spend training your players. Into it? A. Yes B. Yes, but capped so nobody runs away with it C. No, keep the league separate

  4. Create-a-player. Build your own guy and level him up with a mini-game on the site? A. Yes B. Maybe later C. Not for me

  5. What would make you quit?

  6. What's the one thing it HAS to have?

Drop your answers below. The more you tell me, the better this gets.

Which of these features should be included and excluded?

Salary cap and contracts - Yes.

Free agency - Yes.

Trades - Yes.

Draft with scouting (you don't see real ratings until you scout) - Yes.

Player development and aging - Yes. Not sure you can create what I think you are without it. Well.. No... Not if it resets every year. Why not reset every year? Doesn't mean you stop at the end of Football season, but you do reset at the start of it.

Injuries - Tough one. If it is reset every year, then... You could literlaly just use real life injuries. Player in RL gets injured, some in game.

Hiring and firing coaches - Unsure. I mean.. If it's YOUR team, all it is permissions to change your settings. If it's a game mechanic, you are paying people. How do you refelect that in game?

Playbooks and schemes - Sure.

Weather and home field - If it's based on RL. Cool. Only if it's based on RL. Everybody can go back and check what it was. The game didn't "F" you, it's just what happened.

How often should games sim? A. Every day B. Every other day C. Once a week, like the NFL - C

How much time would you put in? A. 5 minutes a day B. 30 minutes a week C. Whatever it takes - I don't know anymore. Without knowing the answers to the above, I don't know the below.

Doing stuff on Hizzle (picks, Cap Space, posting) earns points you spend training your players. Into it? A. Yes B. Yes, but capped so nobody runs away with it C. No, keep the league separate - Empty internet springs to mind. I don't know what to do about it.

Create-a-player. Build your own guy and level him up with a mini-game on the site? A. Yes B. Maybe later C. Not for me - A later thing. Make the rest of it work first, and then figure this out.

What would make you quit? - I'm still trying to figure out what will make me play. What I want might make me want to quit. Typical human.

What's the one thing it HAS to have? - Multiple playbooks. Maybe based on the coach, or coach rating for a certain stat. Plays don't work as well if you didn't PRACTICE them. That's what practice is for. It's a valuable thing to have a QB that has ALWAYS ran your offense. Or a Safety/CB combo that works well together and knows what the other does on various plays.
