Upgrade wood to stone, then iron before chasing diamonds. The wrong pickaxe can destroy a valuable ore block without giving you its intended drop.
A mining trip that comes home
Pack a pickaxe, spare sticks, torches, food, blocks, a water bucket and a way to record coordinates. Leave irreplaceable loot at base. Make a staircase or a visible cave route, light your return path and block dangerous side passages before opening the next one.
Do not dig straight down or directly above your head. Expose ore from a safe side, check for lava and gravel, and mine around a diamond vein before removing its last supporting blocks. A full inventory of stone is less valuable than room for the item you came to collect.
Match the tool to the job
- A wooden pickaxe gathers early stone materials.
- A stone pickaxe gets your iron operation started.
- An iron pickaxe or better is needed for the ordinary diamond-ore route.
- A diamond pickaxe lets you collect obsidian for portals and enchanting.
UNSURE: a single best diamond Y level for every current world and strategy. Deep mining, cave exposure, lava risk and existing terrain all affect a practical route. This draft avoids repeating the old pre-Caves-and-Cliffs Y=11 shortcut as a current optimum.
Enchant before expensive risks
Craft the table with four obsidian, two diamonds and a book. Add bookshelves, keep the enchanting gap clear and bring lapis and experience. Preserve a good pickaxe before you take every diamond into the Nether.
Netherite upgrades use a smithing table, a diamond item, a Netherite ingot and a Netherite Upgrade template. Gather or duplicate templates before consuming the last one; an old ingot-only recipe misses the current template step.
