Your first goal is a lit shelter, dependable food and a way to find home. A dragon can wait until you own a door.

Daylight checklist

  1. Break logs and collect them. Turn some into planks, craft a table and make a wooden pickaxe.
  2. Mine enough cobblestone for a stone pickaxe and furnace. Keep spare wood for tools and fuel.
  3. Collect food while daylight lasts. Keep useful animals alive near home if you can start a breeding pair.
  4. Choose a small base near food and materials. Record its coordinates rather than assuming you will recognize the hill later.
  5. Build walls and a roof, block open entrances and add torches. A small dirt shelter is fine; expansion is tomorrow's problem.

A bed is a project, not a requirement to panic

Gather wool and planks for a bed when possible. Use it in the Overworld to set a safer return point and sleep when the game permits. Without a bed, spend the first night indoors crafting, smelting and organizing. Do not sprint through darkness just because the house is plain.

First iron priorities

Hizzle's suggested order is a shield, iron pickaxe and bucket before optional decoration, then a full armor set. The pickaxe unlocks diamond mining; a water bucket supports exploration and recoveries. Keep spare food and tools at home so one death does not erase your ability to retrieve the first set.

If you die

Record the location, rebuild a minimal rescue kit and approach from a safer route. Dropped items normally despawn after five minutes while their area is loaded, not simply five minutes on your wall clock. Dying again beside the same hazard is not a recovery plan. A recovery compass points to the last death in the same dimension; an ordinary compass points toward world spawn, not your latest bed.
