Project Zomboid how to barricade windows: carry a suitable hammer, planks and nails, right-click the window from the intended side and choose the wooden Barricade action. Keep a usable exit; a safer-looking house can still become a trap.

The wooden setup

The current building reference lists one plank and two nails per board, with an appropriate ordinary hammer. A sledgehammer is not a substitute for a nail-driving hammer. The separate current Carpentry guide supports wooden barricading at Carpentry 0.

Single source for the exact per-board materials: the detailed current building reference. This draft does not turn conflicting generic tables into verified hit-point totals or promise that every modded hammer works.

Add protection deliberately

  1. Check the room and the outside approach before starting a noisy action.
  2. Put the required tools and materials where the action can use them. Unpack a box of nails if the menu does not recognize it as loose materials.
  3. Stand on the side you intend to barricade and open the window’s context menu.
  4. Choose Barricade, let the action complete and inspect the result.
  5. Repeat only as needed, keeping a separate exit accessible.

The reference allows up to four boards per side. That is a maximum option, not Hizzle’s instruction to seal every opening. A heavily boarded window cannot also be your quick exit while it remains blocked.

Protection has limits

Zombies can damage barricades. Curtains and boards serve different jobs, and neither guarantees an empty approach when you wake. Do not dismantle your only staircase on the assumption that an upper floor makes the survivor permanently untouchable: Stable 42.21’s notes include a fix restoring zombies’ ability to tear down sheet ropes.

Metal methods require a separate tool/material setup. UNSURE: all current metal costs, durability modifiers and modded barricade types; those need their own numerical audit. No in-game construction test is claimed.
