The Project Zomboid best starting town for beginners is Rosewood, in Hizzle’s editorial judgment, with Riverside a useful alternative for a plan built around nearby water. Choose a manageable first neighborhood, not a guaranteed building or a promise that the whole town is safe.

Why Rosewood?

The current beginner reference treats Rosewood as a smaller, easier place to orient yourself than the busier West Point start. Hizzle favors that shorter learning loop: a shelter, nearby houses and a clear return route.

The fire station and police station are tempting landmarks. Do not treat either as a mandatory first stop. A crowd on the approach matters more than a loot list, and occupation-dependent spawns do not guarantee that your preferred building will be empty.

When Riverside makes more sense

Riverside offers a recognizable water-oriented plan and spread-out residential areas in the checked reference. It suits a player who wants to learn food and water logistics. River access still requires a safe route, equipment and preparation; it is not instant drinking water or a free fishing setup.

Why an old town route may fail

The developer’s Build 42 overview specifically lists Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron and Dixie among reworked locations. Buildings, landscaping and the context around landmarks changed.

Use the current in-game map and the street in front of you. Mark a retreat point before entering a dense block. Do not copy a Build 41 coordinate and assume every door or loot room still behaves the same way.

Custom Sandbox can open different town choices; server maps and mods add further differences. Single source for the detailed beginner town comparison: the current ProjectZom opening guide.
