Project Zomboid how to sleep: find a safe usable bed or other supported sleep surface, right-click it and choose Sleep when the survivor is eligible. Rest is different: it recovers exertion-related Endurance rather than replacing sleep for Fatigue.
Pick the problem you actually have
A winded survivor who has just run or fought needs a break from exertion. A tired survivor who has been awake too long needs sleep. Repeatedly sitting down does not turn an exhausted overnight schedule into a rested character.
The checked sleep guide separates these meters. Hizzle recommends finding the bed before fatigue becomes a combat problem, rather than beginning a new loot run and hoping a chair will solve every moodle afterward.
Sleep in a defensible place
- Clear nearby danger and inspect the room and its approaches.
- Use a bed or another surface that actually offers Sleep; do not assume every chair has the same options.
- Read the context-menu reason if Sleep is greyed out.
- Address the stated obstacle, such as danger, panic, pain or insufficient tiredness, rather than repeatedly opening the same menu.
- Leave an accessible way out and check the survivor’s condition after waking.
Single source for detailed sleep eligibility: the current sleep article. This draft deliberately avoids a universal eight-hour rule, exact medicine doses or a promise that any floor, pillow or car seat has identical quality.
Multiplayer can change the question
The separate current multiplayer reference describes SleepAllowed and SleepNeeded. Ask the host which are enabled before concluding that a missing action is a personal bug. Shared time and group sleep behavior are also server matters.
Keep the branch difference
Pre-Release 42.22 explicitly prevents sleep while a Bad Smell moodle is present. That change belongs to Pre-Release in this check, not an assumed new Stable rule. UNSURE: every modded fatigue setting and sleep surface interaction. Hizzle has not performed an in-game sleep test.
