Project Zomboid Stable or Pre-Release? Choose Stable 42.21 for ordinary play at this check. Pre-Release 42.22.1 is the testing branch, while Legacy 41 is an older game line. The developer recommends that average players stay on Stable.

Three labels, three different jobs

  • Stable 42.21: the current default game used by this guide.
  • Pre-Release 42.22.1: the latest checked testing hotfix, following the 42.22 feature update.
  • legacy41: the Steam branch for the older Build 41 line, documented in the Build 42 Stable release announcement.

On October 27 the developer renamed the testing branch from Unstable to Pre-Release. Older instructions using “Unstable” are historical wording, not proof that Build 42 itself is still unavailable to ordinary players.

Windows Steam steps

  1. Close the game and back up any save you want to preserve before changing a valuable setup.
  2. In Steam Library, right-click Project Zomboid and choose Properties.
  3. Open Game Versions & Betas.
  4. Use the default/no-beta choice for ordinary Stable play, or select Pre-Release only if you intend to test it. Select legacy41 only for a matching older setup.
  5. Wait for Steam’s update, then check the displayed version before loading or joining anything.

Match the server too

A 42.21 client and a 42.22 server are not interchangeable merely because both say Build 42. Check the exact version and required mods. Stable 42.21 adds a mismatch notification for multiplayer connections.

The developer does not guarantee that a long-term save moved to Pre-Release will work there or return cleanly afterward. UNSURE: every downgrade, modded save and storefront rollout. This guide gives a dated branch decision, not an automatic conversion promise.
