Project Zomboid how to hotwire cars: reach Mechanics 2 and Electrical 1, or use the Burglar occupation’s hotwiring ability, then choose Hotwire Engine from the driver’s vehicle menu. A successful hotwire bypasses the missing key; it does not supply fuel, battery charge or a healthy engine.
Before you climb in
Clear the immediate approach and decide where the car will go. Search for its key before spending time under the dashboard. The checked guides list the ignition, glove box and nearby area as useful checks. A key to another car does not solve this one.
Check the vehicle’s fuel and condition. A car that cannot start for mechanical reasons remains a stationary place to be surrounded, even after the ignition has been bypassed.
Hotwire on default keyboard controls
- Get into the driver’s seat of an accessible vehicle.
- Open the vehicle radial with V.
- Choose Hotwire Engine when you meet its requirements.
- Allow the action to finish. A failed attempt may require another try; do not ignore approaching zombies.
- After success, use the normal engine-start control, ordinarily W in the checked keyboard guide.
The current Mechanics guide and a separate current vehicle guide agree on the 2/1 requirement and Burglar exception. Older “Electrical 3 plus Mechanics 2” or reversed-level recipes are not the requirement used here.
Why Electrician alone is not enough
Electrical is only half of the normal requirement. A character with high Electrical but no Mechanics still needs Mechanics 2 unless another supported ability supplies the exception. Likewise, Mechanics alone does not supply Electrical 1.
UNSURE: every modded vehicle and server override. Do not infer that every locked car is reachable or every hotwire has the same success odds. No live driving or hotwiring test was performed by Hizzle.
