Deadlock's best hero for beginners is McGinnis if you want to learn through sustained shooting and holding a position, in Hizzle's editorial judgment. She has a machine gun, turrets, an area heal and a wall, giving you useful jobs beyond chasing kills. This is a learning recommendation, not a measured win-rate ranking.

What each tool teaches

Tool A useful beginner habit
Machine gun Keep a target in sight while preserving cover and ammunition.
Mini Turret Think about which approach you want to defend.
Medicinal Specter Recognize a place where you and a teammate can safely recover.
Spectral Wall Separate a threat or protect a retreat. Check that your teammate is on the useful side.
Heavy Barrage Look for a safe position before committing to a long-range attack.

She starts with two stamina, so movement mistakes can be expensive. A turret does not replace watching your minimap. Do not stand still just because you placed a heal.

What if she feels wrong?

Try another hero in practice before committing to a match. Test the gun, movement and each ability, then ask whether you understand how to farm and escape. There are at least four unique abilities per hero, with upgrades to learn. An attractive tier-list position does not remove that learning cost.
