The Slay the Spire 2 best character for beginners is Ironclad, in Hizzle’s editorial judgment. His starting availability, direct attacks and post-combat recovery make it easier to see why a turn worked. This is a learning recommendation, not a measured strongest-character ranking.
What makes the first choice useful
The checked starting reference lists 80 base HP for Ironclad. The character guide describes Burning Blood healing 6 HP after combat. Those baseline numbers are not permission to lose six health deliberately in every fight: a lethal turn still ends the run, and modifiers can change the surrounding calculation.
Stay with one character long enough to recognize the difference between a damage problem and a draw problem. Switching after every loss can make both look like bad luck.
Compare the learning jobs
- Ironclad: begin with direct damage and defense; add a supported scaling or Exhaust plan when rewards provide it.
- Silent: learn card flow and the timing of discard, Poison and repeated small attacks.
- Regent: track Stars separately from Energy and pay attention to how long Forge investments take to repay.
- Necrobinder: monitor Osty’s condition as well as your own health, and distinguish delayed Doom from an immediate kill.
- Defect: learn the passive and Evoke behavior of the orbs you actually have, rather than assuming every zero-cost card belongs together.
The unlock order does not establish a difficulty order. A player who enjoys another resource system may learn faster with that character. Read the specific character page before committing to a build recipe.
UNSURE: an independently normalized character win-rate ranking across Main, Beta, Ascension, mods and co-op. Public tier lists with different samples are not interchangeable evidence.
