Slay the Spire 2 deck size has no universal ideal number. Hizzle recommends keeping cards that perform useful jobs at a playable cost, then checking whether draw and selection let you reach them. A smaller deck is not automatically stronger if it cannot survive the next fight.

A number you can use correctly

Suppose a freshly shuffled pile has 15 cards, including three acceptable answers, and you draw five without replacement. The chance of seeing at least one answer is about 73.6%.

  • Remove one non-answer: 14 cards, three answers, about 76.9%.
  • Add one genuinely useful answer: 16 cards, four answers, about 81.9%.

Worked out by Hizzle: these use 1 − C(non-answers, draws) / C(all cards, draws). They are mathematical examples, not game win rates. They assume a random fresh pile and ignore cost, turn order, innate cards, further draw, retained cards and encounter powers.

Why the larger example can improve

The added card is an answer in the example. Adding an irrelevant card instead would dilute the existing answers. Likewise, removal can improve the probability while reducing real damage or Block if the removed card was doing a necessary job.

Compare what the deck can play, not only what it can draw. Finding three expensive answers together does not help if your resources only support one.

Diagnose the actual failure

If your first cycle cannot defend, add or improve defense. If good cards arrive too slowly, examine draw, selection and filler. If you run out of resources, another payoff may worsen the problem. Player discussions support several viable sizes, so Hizzle does not turn one successful 15-, 25- or 40-card run into a universal requirement.
