This Slay the Spire 2 Regent guide recommends keeping immediate damage and defense while building a supported Stars or Sovereign Blade plan. Stars can carry between turns, but a resource you never spend cannot rescue an already lost fight.

Track two budgets

Check a card’s Energy and Star requirements separately. If you have enough Energy but too few Stars, you still cannot pay the full cost. Hizzle suggests naming the next useful Star purchase before adding another generator.

For a simple planning example, a payoff needing three Stars is unavailable while you hold two. Generating more matters when it enables a real turn; banking indefinitely while taking damage is a different proposition. This example does not assign that cost to an unverified card.

Make Forge repay the setup

Forge improves the Sovereign Blade. The relevant question is how soon you can find and play the Blade after investing. In a short fight, direct damage or Block may finish the job before a large Forge investment would pay off.

One concrete Main number: Major Update 2 raised Furnace’s Forge to 5, or 7 upgraded. The same update made Parry give the Blade 10 Block, or 14 upgraded, rather than a separate Block trigger. Use current card text to understand what is gained and when it can be used.

A first-cycle check

  1. Can the opening hand survive without a perfect resource sequence?
  2. Does a Star or Forge card enable a named follow-up rather than only add a keyword?
  3. Can you draw or retrieve the payoff before the fight punishes the setup?

The published Main strategy supports this approach. It is Single source for the detailed build route, with official patch support for the example values. UNSURE: a universal winning list, exact damage rankings and every co-op interaction. Beta changes to Star costs and Regalite are not silently applied to Main.
